let's get wi-fi everywhere

just saw an interesting essay posted in favor of having governments provide broadband access - check it out at wifinetnews. the author gives a fresh look at the debate by framing it in the dilemma of rolling out electricity to the masses at the turn of the last century.

i don't really care if it's government or private companies that provide it; i just want cheap, fast, ubiquitous broadband as soon as possible :)

Bring on the broad band, i don't really know which one would be better, if the govt introduced it to the masses or if it was privitized....i just want it!

I think in order to be truly effective the Gov. should work hand in hand with private companies through financial assitance and legislation to deploy a nation wide WiFi. I think Gov. working alone would bring itself to a crawl with beaurocratic BS while private industry would only look to doing this in areas that would provide a profitable return on investment.

Of course you will get your hand full of conspiracy nuts who will see this as an opportunity for Gov. to track their every internet based move. I got news for those people, your not as anonymos as you think and they don't need to own the WiFi to keep tabs on your porn surfing habits.

It would be nice to have access virtualy anywhere in a community. :) But then these are my 2 worthless cents..
